I'm on my Way: Professional Goals Reflection

Looking back at my master’s application I had three major professional goals. One was to earn a Master of Arts in Education degree with a concentration in special education (MAED). I decided I wanted to have a concentration in special education because I thought the skills and information gained through this program would have a positive impact on my career and help me write, more developmentally appropriate lessons for all of the students in my classroom.  My second goal was to obtain my Professional Teaching Certificate. My third goal was to become a teacher leader in my district. I chose these three goals because they will help me grow as a teacher and help me better serve my students.

My current professional goals are listed below. I still plan to earn my MAED with a concentration in special education. After I have earned my masters degree I plan to apply for my professional teaching certificate. I am still striving to become a teacher leader in my district, but I also understand that I can learn a lot from other more seasoned teachers in my building. I am continuing to work on improving my classroom management techniques, which will help my classroom run as smoothly as possible. My last goal is to help my students become successful, productive and responsible citizens both inside and outside the classroom.

While I have learned a lot and changed since I applied to my masters program many of my goals have stayed the same.  This makes sense because I just recently applied to my master program about a year ago so my original goals were still pretty current. I also have not achieved all of my original goals, so I carried them over to my new goal list. For example, I plan to earn my masters degree in the spring. I only have two more classes including this one to complete before my degree is finished. While pursuing my professional Teaching Certificate I have been furthering my education and keeping up with best practice, which helps insure that I have the greatest tools for teaching.  I am still working to become a teacher leader in my district. I hope to set a good example for other teachers and become someone others look to for advice. I am currently serving on multiple committees and have attended many workshops to continue my education and learn new techniques that I can share with my colleagues. I will continue to team plan and work closely with the other teachers in my grade level to give my students the best learning opportunities. I recognize the importance of continuing to improve my classroom management skills and techniques. I understand that every group of students is different and unique and they may need different management tools and techniques to help them be successful. There is no magic fix to classroom management; rather I am trying to maintain a balance of leadership and control, while helping my students take accountability for their actions. Effective classroom management will help my classroom run more smoothly and result in more learning opportunities for my students.
